Transport: planning your journey

NHS West Sussex would encourage everyone to walk, cycle or use public/community transport to access local health services where they are able to. These options benefit health and wellbeing and help the environment.
Plan your journey to NHS services in West Sussex

Where it is not practical to walk, cycle or use public transport, friends, relatives and neighbours may be able to help with transport.

Community transport

A range of providers can help you access health services if you cannot use public transport for health reasons, or where there is no form of transport available to you.

They often operate a Dial-a-Ride service and help you from your door to the vehicle and into the hospital or clinic at the other end. Charges vary from operator to operator.

Community transport providers

There are two lists of community transport providers. Each gives you locations where they will pick you up from, restrictions on where they can take you, and contact details:

  • Information 4 Life (ICIS) has each provider listed online. You can also call ICIS for free from a BT landline on 0800 859929 for help: ICIS Community Transport List
  • West Sussex County Council has an annual directory of providers containing information about the locations they serve and their contact details: WSCC Community Transport Directory.

Patient Transport Service

If you are unable for clinical reasons to use private or public transport to get to and from hospital, you might be eligible to use the Patient Transport Service.

This non-emergency service is commissioned by the NHS for patients with a medical need that prevents them using conventional transport to take them to and from hospitals.

There is no charge for using this scheme but your GP or consultant needs to approve you and apply for this.

Ask for their advice if you think you may be eligible.
